The Constitution's Bodyguard

The following is my presentation, as close as my notes and my memory bring it, along with some [ ] editorial comments for context... Learn and enjoy!

I am here to speak of "The Constitution’s Bodyguard." And, no, he’s not the guy on the right...

The results of that collision, you already know. Especially folks at the Woodrow Wilson library ought to be pleased that this crash occurred. We can’t know what may have happened had that collision not occurred... and we certainly know what did happen. But there is something else we can know: what DID NOT happen.

One of the larger meanings, and to my mind, the largest, of 1912 comes of what did not happen... the revolution what was avoided, that is, What Taft got in the way of. And it didn’t have to not happen.

[I gave the speech without microphone. So startling was the loud voice and this loud graphic that, my friendly observer told me, everyone woke up. It was, shall we say, vastly different from the rest of the presentations, which were mostly readings of the formal papers. They didn't like it, but they'll remember it!]
